Up for sale is a nicely kept 1961 Volkswagen 15-Window Bus, Type 2, featuring a walk-through cabin. The color combination is nice, pearl white & turqoise green, being sold brand new in California. Previous ownership includes the van being moved to Washington state and Oklahoma. The bus received a mild refurbishment in late eighties and it has been mostly cosmetic. The 1,915 cubic centimeters, inline four, built by Franklin’s VW Werks in Kent, Washington, coupled to a 4 speed freeway flyer gearbox have been installed before I bought it. There is a 95-amp alternator, electronic ignition, ceramic coated headers & muffler, Engle camshaft, full-flow oil filter, deep sump.
The suspension is lowered, disk brakes all around, coming from a T3 late model, have been fitted for improved handling under braking, wider DeepVeez wheels and more. It has a pair of Weber carbs from CB Performance were installed in 2018, and recent service also included a tune-up, valve adjustment, and oil change. This split-window Bus is offered by the selling dealer in Tennessee with 20 years of service records.
The original color was Sealing Wax Red and the current color combination dates back to the eighties. The van is equipped with pop-out safari windows and Deluxe trim. I also bought it with the European headlights, manufactured by Bosch, and a luggage rack Westfalia style.
I am crazy about the lowered ride height using a narrowed front axle beam (post'67) and adjustable rear swing-axle plates. The cabin is walk-through trimmed in como green|, center row seats and a carpeted rear compartment.
The dash board is white Pearl and in it there's a Blaupunkt radio fitted, a chrome ashtray, factory clock and a fuel gauge. The van is believed to have a total mileage of 245000, but the clock shows 5000.
The van is rust free, runs like a dream, stops like a brand new vehicle. There is a thick folder filled with service & upgrade receipts from the past 25 years included in this sale.
